Found out why there are so many seagulls in Anglesey - and the whole of the UK for that matter. They farm them! Maybe they should be called "farmgulls"?
This is part of an ancient iron age village, now called Din LLigwy. In this area there is also an ancient burial chamber nearby.
And the ruins of an old medieval chapel.
Another arty photo (I love) of weeds growing in the roofline of the old chapel.
Cruising along the coast stopped in at a little village called Moelfre and found this memorial to shipwrecked sailors and brave and mighty deeds of rescue.
Then onwards to the other side of Anglesey to check out this burial mound called Bryn Celli Ddu. It was the focus of an archeological study years ago which meant it was disassembled to a degree and then reconstructed again.
View of the other side.
I came here in 2004 but the weather was a lot nicer this time and better piccies could be taken.
This is why it is so hard to work out names of Welsh places etc:
The Welsh alphabet is a,b,c,ch,d,dd,e,f,ff,g,ng,h,i,l,ll,m,n,o,p,ph,r,rh,s,t,th,u,w,y.
And only b,d,h,l,m,n,p,and t are pronounced the same as in English.
C is hard as in K
CH is gutteral like 'loch'
DD similar th 'th' as in 'this'
F is like an English V
FF is like an English F
G is hard as in 'gate'
NG as in English 'longing'
LL is a difficult sound (and very common) can't even describe it ...
PH as in English 'telephone'
R is rolled
RH is the same as 'r' but followed by an aspirate (?)
S is hard as in English 'sea' and never soft as in 'those'
SI is pronounced 'sh'
TH as in 'thing'
Which doesn't help much when travelling and looking for place names Llanfairnghornwy or Llangefni or Pwllgwngyll or Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn ...
Leaving now to get to a youth hostel on a lake in the middle of the dramatic Snowdonian mountains, Wales.
Hiya - thanks for the photos and the welsh language lesson - I will study that until it all becomes clear - Not!!! :) but interesting nonetheless!
ReplyDeletehey hey - keep away from London and other hot spots for awhile.... stick with the quiet Welsh countryside!!!
take care! C
